My favorite is Babe Ruth. Of course for the longest time he was the "Home Run King" with the most career home runs until Hank Aaron came along in the 70s. For many seasons he held two season records. The first one is, of course, for the most home runs in a season. Do you know what other record he simultaneously held for several seasons?
Let us know the right answer and I will tell you why I think the Babe is inspirational.
Post your other sports heroes and tell us why they were inspirational. (My other big hero is Andy Hampsten. Anyone here know one of his major accomplishments, and why it is inspirational?)

Yup. For about 5 seasons he was both the leading home run hitter and the player with the most strike outs. To me, that is inspirational for a couple of reasons:
- Every time he came to the plate, he swung for a home run, no singles or grounders or whatever, home runs.
- No matter how many times he struck out he still came back swinging.
So, as a salesperson, I always try to get the whole deal. Not part, not giving it away, not begging. Hitting a home run or striking out.
And, no matter how many times you strike out, just get right back in the game and swing for another home run.

Hampsten rode in a blizzard during the Tour de Suisse, subsequently taking the overall lead after that stage.
Sports hero would have to be Mugsy Bogues. He's the man that no one sees, he's behind the flashbulbs. He was literally the little man on the team. The reason he is so inspirational is he didn't need all of the God-given tools of Jordan, Pippen, Johnson, Chamberlin. He played the cards he was dealt and ran the show for the Hornets. He called the shots and everyone listened to this person who was part of the <5% that couldn't shoot the lights out and dunk.

OK Zippy, you are very close with the answer.
He rode over the Gavia pass in Italy during the 1988 Giro de Italia, coming in second on the day, and going on to win the overall, the only American ever to win the race. He also won the Tour de Suisse twice and took the Alpe d'Huez stage of the Tour de France in 1992.Italian cycling fans loved him for his bravery on the Gavia that crazy day and have always treated him as one of their own. He and his wife now run a cycle touring company in Tuscany where their clients cycle in the mornings and learn cooking from Italian chefs in the afternoon. Here he is on the Gavia:
Here is a picture of the pass when it isn't snowing. Scared yet?
Do you also remember Nate "Tiny" Archibald?

Muhammad Ali- If anyone has watched boxing before Muhammad Ali was definately not the best pound for pound boxer. I would not even call him the best boxer of his time, but he has the world sold as "the greatest." Talk about assuming the sale. Muhammad Ali spoke with confidence and anyone in sales should have a poster somewhere with one of his infamous knockout pictures. Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.
