Hi Everybody,
I have won the referral contest for 16 out of the last 20 months, coming in second the other 4 times. I am currently the all-time leader in referrals. I shared my secrets at last year's Las Vegas meeting with the person who has beaten me three out of the four times. Referral Leaderboard
Now I will share with the whole group, so you can make the contest more than a two person show. Why? Well I like to help out, but that is not really it. I pick up about 10,000 royalty points each month right now from data I put in almost two years ago. I don't have much new data to add, and little by little I lost royalty ownership on some of my contacts. The best way for me to keep up my royalty totals is to KEEP GETTING NEW USERS.
So, here we go:
- On Jigsaw, go to My Account, then My Settings. Look at your Personal Referral URL. Mine looks like this: http://www.jigsaw.com/join/ItsFree. Yours will look similar, but instead of ItsFree it will have your screen name. CHANGE THIS RIGHT AWAY. Nobody cares about your screen name. Change it to something that will catch their attention. "Free" is always good.
- Join sales related groups on LinkedIn. You can join 50 groups. Regularly post discussions with the group telling them about how they can USE Jigsaw to make their lives better. Use catchy titles. Give them a little bit of information, so that next week you can give them a little bit different information. Make sure you put your personal URL in the space allowed for you. Also be sure to Edit the information that pops up after you attach the URL, to mold it to the users needs. Be careful, some groups (especially technical groups) will throw you out for posting this kind of information, but usually not the sales or recruiting related groups. But, who cares if you get thrown out of a group. There are millions of groups, and if you get thrown out of one from promoting Jigsaw, you probably didn't want to be in that group anyway, right?
- Respond to Group Discussions. You can actually set your personal group settings to have an email sent to you for each new discussion. Read all the new discussions. Decide which discussions are of interest to people who might also be interested in Jigsaw. Reply to their discussion that they should try Jigsaw, and paste in your personal URL.
- Invite people who Link with you to join Jigsaw. Whenever you get a request to Link or someone accepts your Link request, you will get a message in your LinkedIn mailbox notifying you of your new connection. Click on the "send a message" link and thank them for connecting. ALSO, tell them what a great tool Jigsaw is and how it might help them. Paste in your personal referral URL.
- Form your own group. Be sure to be specific about who the group is for and what you hope to achieve in the Group Profile. LinkedIn will suggest your group to people its algorithms think are likely to join. Set up the email templates in the group management area. Create one for people requesting to join the group. Give them information about your group, but also suggest they should try Jigsaw. Make sure your settings are adjusted so that people are not automatically allowed into your group. Go to your group each day, or every other day, and approve people to join. Make sure that your welcoming template also reminds them to sign up for Jigsaw.
- Answer questions. Review the new questions that are posted in LinkedIn all the time. For some questions, using Jigsaw is the right answer. Answer their question and be sure to paste in your personal referral URL.
Bottom line: Some people won't even think about trying Jigsaw until they see the message multiple times. Keep it up and meld the work into your daily routine. Once you get things set up, you can work LinkedIn in just a couple of minutes each day, and bring in dozens of new referrals for yourself.

Wow, I am surprised Linked-In lets you get away with that. I lost my ability to join Yahoo groups because Yahoo considered the exact same tactic spam -- and I had to get a new yahoo email to rejoin groups which is why I never tried it in Linked-in. I guess the key is making the post look personalized and not cut & paste the same message multiple times like I did?

The secret to LinkedIn is to ALWAYS make your posts relevant to the discussion/answers/group at hand. Relevant posts won't get you thrown out. SPAM will.

Also, if you check the LinkedIn Do's and Don'ts you will find that it is OK to present links to your business or other sites, but it is NOT OK to send out messages with the same. So systematically sending out email messages to the group or your contacts simply pushing Jigsaw would get you in trouble - as I have learned the hard way, but providing information about how Jigsaw might be able to help someone specifically is welcomed on LinkedIn.
In all cases, MAKE SURE THAT OFFERING A LINK TO JIGSAW IS RELEVANT TO THE LINKEDIN USER'S NEEDS.

One more aside. I recently asked the members of my groups to Link with me directly using a Group Announcement. (The first time I had done that in my groups 4-year history). I got over 1200 invitations to connect this last week. On Wednesday, I was in the middle of accepting more than 700 invitations, and sending out welcoming messages, when my account was suddenly suspended for too many page views. I contacted customer support over there via email, and they released the suspension within the hour. If you have ever worked with LinkedIn customer support before, you will know that is somewhat of a miracle.
